This exhibition has come about through a very wonderful set of circumstances.
When Peter Prendergast (himself a great supporter of MOMA WALES) died, an obituary men¬tioned that a major exhibition of his work had recently been held here. Jeremy Raynham-Kemp, Arthur Kemp’s adopted son, who read the obituary was looking for a home for his father’s studio collection of watercolours and he offered them to MOMA WALES.

Arthur Charles Kemp was born in 1906 and died in 1968. He trained first as a musician because his father thought it a safer career than art. But he met and married a fellow musician ‘of private means’ who funded his training as an artist and enabled him to teach art and paint for the rest of his life. He shunned exhibitions during his lifetime so his name was virtually unknown and Jeremy was anxious that we should try and redress this. We asked Paul Liss of Liss Fine Art to help us and Paul immediately set up a website www.arthurkemp.co.uk. Paul was also a tremendous friend to Jeremy during the last months of Jeremy’s life.

The proceeds of this exhibition will be used to restore, mount and frame twenty Arthur Kemp paintings which Jeremy selected for The Tabernacle Collection (to be exhibited later this year) and any profits will be devoted to the work of MOMA WALES which he so much admired.

Jeremy died on 28 November 2008. This exhibition, like ones in the future, will remind us of his phenomenal generosity and courage and the goodwill which accompanied his unique gift.
